In 2024 sprak Matthew Ferguson de woorden “Dat verklaar en beloof ik” uit en werd hij Nederlands staatsburger. Zijn tentoonstelling in Parterretrap onderzoekt hoe de samenleving is opgebouwd, wat haar conventies zijn en wat er, naast een juridische status, nodig is om deel uit te maken van die samenleving.

Ferguson gebruikt fotografie om de materiële en institutionele structuren van het dagelijks leven in Nederland te onderzoeken. Dit resulteert in een archiefserie die te zien zal zijn in Parterretrap en uitgegeven wordt door Omgezet Press, een uitgeverij die Ferguson speciaal voor dit project heeft opgericht.

Kort na de tentoonstelling wordt een exemplaar van zijn publicatie ingediend bij de KB, nationale bibliotheek, een organisatie die ernaar streeft om van elke in Nederland uitgegeven publicatie een exemplaar te bewaren als onderdeel van het nationale culturele erfgoed. Ferguson wil ervoor zorgen dat zijn archiefserie officieel deel gaat uitmaken van de Nederlandse nationale geschiedenis.

Dat verklaar en beloof ik kan in deze zin worden gezien als een daad van actieve participatie: het transformeert de huiselijke ruimte van Parterretrap in een sociale ruimte gericht op uitwisseling, een ruimte waar institutionele kaders en persoonlijke reflectie samenkomen.

Tijdens Hoogtij wordt er gegeten volgens een recept uit ‘Het Nieuwe Haagse Kookboek’.

Matthew Ferguson is een kunstenaar die in Den Haag woont en werkt. Eerder woonde en werkte hij in Eindhoven, Londen, Norwich, Crewe, Hexham en Barrow-in-Furness.

In 2024, Matthew Ferguson spoke the words “Dat verklaar en beloof ik” and became a Dutch citizen. His exhibition at Parterretrap explores what, besides legal status, is necessary and required to be part of a society, its conventions, and how it is constructed.

Ferguson uses photography to examine the material and institutional structures of daily life in the Netherlands. This results in an archival series that will be on display at Parterretrap and published by Omgezet Press, a publishing house Ferguson founded specifically for this project. 

Shortly after the exhibition, a copy of his publication will be submitted to the KB  National Library of the Netherlands, an organization that strives to preserve one copy of every publication published in the Netherlands as part of the national cultural heritage. Ferguson aims to ensure that his archival series officially becomes part of Dutch national history.

Dat verklaar en beloof ik in this sense can be seen as an act of active participation: it transforms the domestic space of Parterretrap into a social space focused on exchange, a space where institutional frameworks and personal reflection converge. 

During Hoogtij, food is served according to a recipe from ‘Het Nieuwe Haagse Kookboek’.
